Day 12 of the 28 Days of Black Liberation 2024 series
Born in 1953, Kamau Sadiki is a loving father, grandfather, Muslim, veteran Black Panther and member of the New Afrikan Independence movement. He has been unjustly imprisoned since 2001.
At the age of 17, Sadiki joined the Black Panther Party and dedicated his life to serving his people. Sadiki was a rank-and-file member of the Party who read, understood, and internalized the 10 point program & platform, the 3 main rules of discipline and the 8 points of attention. He used this knowledge to lovingly organize his community towards revolution. He tirelessly worked the Free Breakfast program, sold the Panther newspaper and whether it was housing tenants, mothers and fathers, or children within the community he constantly educated everyone.
In 1969, the FBI director Hoover declared the Black Panther Party the biggest threat to National Security and relentlessly sought to destroy it. In 1971 an Atlanta police officer was murdered around the same time Sadiki became a member of the Black Liberation Army, which served as an underground organization to combat police terrorism within the black community. In 1979, BPP and BLA member Assata Shakur (who has a child w Sadiki) escaped from prison and gained political exile in Cuba.
Despite there being no physical evidence to implicate Sadiki, in 1999 the FBI threatened to reopen the case and imprison him if he didn’t reveal the location of Assata Shakur. Sadiki rejected the offer and 3 years later, 31 years after the incident, Sadiki was indicted and sentenced to life plus 10 years. This was in a period of heightened anti-Muslim sentiment following 9/11.
Sadiki was targeted and imprisoned for being a member of these organizations and parenting a child with Assata Shakur. He will be 71 on the 19th of this month. He is in ill health and enduring prison medical neglect. His two daughters are working rigorously to free him and beginning today is a week long action sponsored by @mxmgnational and @freekamausadiki to help build a movement to free Kamau Sadiki!
