Dr Mutulu Shakur is a world renowned Doctor of acupuncture who dedicated his life to improving healthcare in the Black community. He has been part of the New Afrikan Independence Movement since the age of 16. Dr. Shakur was a member of the Revolutionary Action Movement and the Republic of New Afrika, worked closely with the Black Panther Party and is commonly known to be rapper 2Pac Shakur’s stepfather. Due to his work in the Black Liberation movement he was a target of the FBI’s Cointelpro program.
During the 1970s Mutulu Shakur worked at Lincoln Detox and innovated the use of acupuncture to treat drug addiction. By the late 1970’s Dr. Shakur’s work in acupuncture and drug detoxification was both nationally and internationally known and he was invited to address members of the medical community around the world.
In 1982 he was indicted on federal conspiracy charges for participation in the growing armed struggle movement in the United States. He was accused of participating with the group that broke comrade Assata Shakur out of prison. Dr. Mutulu Shakur was convicted and has been a political prisoner until his release last year.
